Insurance for Business Owners
Every business is different. Some types of commercial insurance are necessary for every business. Others provide protection for the unique risks that a business may have.
At the very least, your business will probably need property insurance to protect your building and contents, general liability insurance to shield your business from things like bodily injury or negligence, and workers’ compensation to provide benefits for injured employees.

How does auto insurance for businesses work?
Commercial auto insurance protects your business from financial loss due to an auto accident involving a work vehicle. This includes specialty vehicles operated by employees, such as trucks, vans and utility vehicles used to transport goods and services. Our coverage also includes company-owned cars, often used daily for simple deliveries or traveling to and from various clients or customers.
What is covered under a commercial auto insurance policy?
Collision Insurance: Pays for a loss to your auto or equipment caused by a collision of a covered auto with another object or an overturn of the covered auto
Comprehensive: Pays for a loss caused by glass breakage, hitting a bird or an animal, or falling objects or missiles
Specified causes of loss: Pays for loss to a covered auto or its equipment caused by fire, lightning, explosion, theft, windstorm, hail, earthquake, flood, mischief or vandalism
Towing and labor: Pays for towing and labor costs incurred when a covered private passenger auto is disabled
Supplementary coverages and endorsements include:
Auto medical payments insurance: Provides sources of medical expense reimbursement for policyholders and their passengers injured in auto accidents
No-fault (personal injury) protection: Pays regardless of which party was at fault, guaranteeing you recovery in the event of a loss, where available
Uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage: Recovery for those injured in an accident caused by an at-fault motorist without an adequate amount of bodily injury liability coverage to pay for any or all of the damages
Commercial auto insurance coverage can be expansive depending on your policy, but there are a few critical exclusions to be aware of:
Employee injuries while operating a company vehicle: Hospital bills and lost wages accrued by employees who sustain injuries resulting from a car accident are not covered under commercial auto insurance because both of these expenses should be covered under workers’ compensation insurance.
Employee injuries while operating their own vehicle to fulfill work duties: Injuries and property damage inflicted by an employee on the clock but in their own vehicle don’t fall under commercial auto insurance coverage.
Injuries or property damage incurred intentionally:Â Any injuries or damage caused by a vehicle on purpose are not covered.

Who is an insured under a commercial auto insurance policy?
As the business owner, you will be a named insured on your commercial auto policy, but anyone with permission to drive company vehicles—i.e. your employees—will be covered as well.
If your business owns a vehicle and/or employees operate the vehicle for tasks like transporting goods, towing equipment or making deliveries, you need commercial auto insurance. If an accident occurs while driving for work, your personal auto coverage won’t cover you—auto insurance is an absolutely necessary expense for your business.
In many states, commercial auto insurance coverage is even required for vehicles owned by a business.
With that said, we understand the line between business and personal use is blurry, especially for small businesses. That’s why EMC agents are expertly trained to assess your needs and provide a commercial auto insurance policy that works best for your budget and helps you work safely.
How much is commercial auto insurance?
Auto insurance for business typically costs more than personal auto coverage. However, commercial auto insurance protects multiple people and vehicles within your workplace, and often, there are more risks associated with business usage.
Commercial auto insurance costs can vary depending on your industry and the types of vehicles you own. Multiple other factors may come into play, including:
How many vehicles you own and how often they are used
Driving records of those who may operate the vehicle
Type of coverage needed and the policy limits you choose
Claims history

Small Commercial
What’s the best way to protect your small business? By getting a policy that covers all your bases. It’s as simple as BOP.
A business owner’s policy—or BOP insurance as it’s commonly referred to—is designed to put small business owners’ minds at ease by satisfying and simplifying their coverage needs. EMC’s BOP is called the EMC Businessowners Program, which offers property and liability insurance alongside specialized coverages to meet the unique needs of your small business. This policy protects you from claims resulting from building damage, theft of business equipment, injury to a customer and more.
Getting the right coverage for a small business insurance policy can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. With over 110 years of experience serving policyholders and independent agents, you can Count on EMC® for all your small business insurance needs.
What is a Business Owners Policy (BOP)?
Designed with small businesses in mind, BOP insurance combines commercial property insurance and general liability insurance in one convenient policy. Business owners policy insurance is comprehensive enough to ensure your fundamental insurance needs are covered, yet customizable enough to tailor for your individual business.
Insurance for business owners is crucial. The advantage of BOP insurance is that it takes care of both business liability and commercial property components.
Who Needs a Business Owners Policy?
As a small business owner, a business owners policy can protect your business from a wide array of potential losses. If you have property that can be stolen or damaged, if you operate your business at a physical location, or if it is possible to be sued, you can benefit from a business owners policy.
At EMC, we offer business owners policy insurance for hundreds of small business classes, including:
Retail
Personal care services
Professional offices
Health care offices
Auto repair shops
Restaurants
And more
What is Covered in a Business Owners Policy?
Business owner’s policy insurance covers the basic components covered by commercial property, commercial liability insurance and business liability insurance.
To avoid the financial responsibility of potential damages and losses, policies like BOP insurance are tailored to cover risks like fire damage, bodily injury, damage to other people’s property or advertising or personal injury.
Commercial Property Insurance Coverage
Commercial property insurance coverage protects your assets such as:
Your building and its contents, including equipment, inventory and furniture

Outdoor property, such as signage or fencing
When the unthinkable happens, like a fire or severe weather, business owners can rest assured that their property inside and outside is protected.
Business Liability Insurance Coverage
General liability helps protect your business from accidents such as:
Bodily injury caused by your employees, products, or services
Damage you cause to property of others
Defense and court costs in the event of a lawsuit
Personalized Claims Support

What is Not Covered Under BOP Insurance?
As a leader in providing insurance for business owners, EMC offers a wide range of products to protect your business from the unexpected. In addition to a business owners policy for property and liability coverage, these additional products are great options to consider to customize your insurance protection:

Workers’ compensation coverage — Workers’ compensation is a type of insurance that provides employees compensation for injuries or disabilities sustained as a result of their job. When you add EMC workers’ compensation to your BOP policy, your business will benefit from a variety of included services that help you manage medical costs and return employees back to work quickly and safely after injuries.
Commercial auto insurance — This insurance protects businesses from financial loss due to an auto accident, including damage caused by collision and towing and labor
Errors & omissions insurance — Also known as professional liability insurance or E&O insurance, this type of insurance helps cover the cost of legal services in the event of a lawsuit claiming that your business made a mistake, completed inadequate work or was negligent
Umbrella Insurance — This insurance offers your small business additional security in the event of a catastrophic liability claim that would otherwise exceed your coverage limits
